A hidden gem overlooking the Gulf of Oman

When I first heard of Muscat, I knew little about the country. I had only seen photos and heard others discuss it and was immediately fascinated about visiting. Living not too far away in Bahrain, I searched for flights and booked reservations as early as possible. The next vacation period came and the highly-anticipated trip finally happened as I was on a plane to Muscat. As of today, I have now visited the country twice on both business and leisure.
Muscat is truly a hidden gem surrounded by mountains with beachfront properties and water activities at your leisure. The views are stunning and never ending as the city is filled with some of the friendliest people in the world.
Enjoy this guide created to help any travelers plan a trip to the beautiful city of Muscat!

Exploring Old Muscat
Bounded by water and mountains, Old Muscat is located a great distance from the city, but is well worth the drive. Home to many of Muscat's biggest tourist attractions, tourists are able enjoy a walk around the Mutrah Souk located across from the Corniche, visit the local Fish Market, and soak up the breathtaking views of many forts and museums within the area.
There are a ton of activities and things to engage in during your stay in Muscat. Forts are the easiest things to see when sightseeing in Muscat as they are located everywhere - all you have to do is look up and you might see one overlooking the city or atop a hill.
Ancient artifacts and views of the city from Nahkhl Fort.

The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque
The Grand Mosque is absolutely stunning in the day and at night. It is recommended that you visit during both times of the day for the full experience and captivating scenery. Much larger than it looks in photos, it can hold up to 20,000 worshippers. It is also home to the second largest Persian carpet which took 600 women four years to weave! How is that for a fun fact?

Al Mirani Fort
Old Muscat is home to many forts including the twin facing forts - Al Mirani and Al Jalali. Overlooking the Sea of Oman, both forts were built during the same period of time to double down on defense and protect Muscat and the Al Alam Palace from invaders.
Visitors can only view the castle from the outside as it is not opened to the public. Tourists can still admire its imposing presence and dramatic visage from outside its walls or out in the harbor.
Mutrah Fish Market

Situated at the heart of Mutrah along Oman's largest harbor, the new fish market serves as the hub for Oman's thriving fishing industry. The city is known for its commercial trade, ports and fishing traditions. It is the public meeting place where fishermen, locals and tourists from all over the world meet under the same roof. More than 100 fish sellers and cutters set up shop to bargain and trade.

Constructed in 2011, the Royal Opera House is worth visiting during any trip to Muscat. Located in Qurum, if travelers are fortunate, try to attend a show or tour the famous landmark and intake the exquisite interior with inlaid wood and arabesque designs.
Mutrah Corniche
Mutrah is the best part of Muscat. Home to many sightseeing opportunities and the city’s main port, the Corniche is a great place to hang out. A boardwalk along the harbor sweeps throughout the entire bay from Mutrah to Old Muscat. Bike rentals are free during the evenings near Al-Riyam Park.
Mutrah Souk
The most popular place in all of Muscat is the Mutrah Souk. Open throughout the day, the smell of incense, fresh fruit and business owners lets you know you are in for an experience. The best time to visit is during the evenings on weekends as the city comes alive at night.
Bait-Al-Baranda Museum
The museum was closed during my trip due to a national holiday. I was unfortunate enough to fully experience the museum and all that it has to offer. However, the tour guide informed me that it is a great selection for those looking to learn about the history and traditions of the Omani culture.

Qantab Beach
Muscat has its share of beaches and the perfect weather to visit them. From Qurum Beach to Shatti Al Qurum, the choice is all yours! Many cafes and restaurants can also be found along the strip near the beaches. Qantab Beach is far from the city, but has scenery that you will enjoy from its hilltop overlooking the ocean.

Depending on your travel plans, there are a plethora of things to do in Muscat. Oman is a hidden gem overlooked by many tourists and travelers.

The Chedi Muscat Hotel and Al Bustan Palace Hotel are both very expensive 5-star rated hotels with a variety of restaurant choices that are quite the sight to see and experience. Even if you are unable to afford a stay in these luxurious hotels, a visit to these landmarks is a must on your visit to Oman. Inexpensive and an easier way to see the city, the Big Bus Hop On Hop Off tours are very affordable and a great way to visit many attractions throughout Muscat. Tourists are able to get off at any stop and visit an attraction and get back on when ready to visit the next destination. This option is very cost efficient for those looking to save money and experience the city of Muscat at the same time. Most hotels have on-site booking agencies and travel agencies that offer local tours and trips such as hiking trips, city tours, shopping adventures, kayaking and boat cruises. Usually, most include hotel pickup, food and drinks and entrance fees.
Overall, my experiences in Muscat has been awesome. The people are very friendly and the food is amazing. I like to call this the hidden gem that is often overlooked and forgotten by tourists.
