The second largest city in all of Egypt

Alexandria has a very impressive and storied past, beginning with its founding by Alexander the Great in 331 BC. Nicknamed the Pearl of the Mediterranean, it sits just off the coast as it is a major economic center and port city.

During the Hellenistic era, it was home to both the legendary Great Library of Alexandria and Pharos Lighthouse, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The city is also known for its setting of the stormy love story between Julius Caesar, Cleopatra and Marc Anthony.

Today, the city is known for its bustling streets filled with traffic, pedestrians and noise. With a little bit of searching travelers can still find some of Alexandria's most prized possessions from its glorious past. These include Greco-Roman inspired monuments, beautiful gardens and remnants of remains and tombs. Alexandria offers treasures that caters to every tourist's style. Check out this article to discover many of these hidden gems!

Many people only visit Alexandria as part of a port city from a cruise or a day trip from Cairo. Find out more and read practical tips on transportation, activities and sightseeing put together to help you plan your own itinerary!

Location: Just north of Cairo (225 km) which is equivalent to 140 miles. It takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours to drive there.

Transportation: Travelers have the option to travel via a domestic flight, train, bus, taxi or by car. Many guided tours will also provide day trips to visit Alexandria. Rental cars or contracted private drivers are also an option.

If traveling solo, consider the train. To avoid the hassle of driving and traffic congestion, consider a day tour or private escort services. To budget, the bus is reasonably cheap.

Tours: Such a great way to travel to Alexandria. Many all-in-one inclusive packages offer transportation, entrance fees, and meals. Before booking, be sure to compare prices to other guided tours.

Weather: The city has a Mediterranean climate with hot, humid summers and mild, rainy winters. The breezes from the sea helps with the very hot temperatures found in the summertime. It is best to visit in the spring and fall seasons.

Clothing: The city is much more conservative than Cairo. Dress modest to avoid disrespectful stares and remarks from the locals as it is seen as a sign of respect to the local culture.

During my visit, I completed a full day, private guided tour which included round trip transportation, all entrance fees, lunch and visits to the city's most notable highlights. The tour was offered by Mr. Brown Sugar Tours. An early start to your day is required and highly recommended as it is a must for any trip to Alex!

Recommended Sites

- Visit Pompey's Pillar and the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa. Located within walking distance of each other, both historical archaeological sites are home to many of Alexandria's remnants of statues, remains and tombs.

The Catacombs were built in the 2nd century and discovered by a donkey that was trapped inside of it. Three sarcophagi are also found inside. Did you know: Caracalla is the Roman Empeor that has a hall named after him in the dead city known as the Catacombs.

- Tour the Citadel of Qaitbay, which offers stunning views of both the city and the Mediterranean Sea. If interested, you may also add the view of the beautiful Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi Mosque to your list as it is just within 15 minutes from the citadel.

- Drive along the Corniche or walk around the harbor area and have lunch at a local seafood restaurant. Just 5 minutes apart, you will also find the Alexandria National Museum and Bibliotheca Alexandrina - home to many museums, galleries and exhibits commemorating the original Library of Alexandria.

- Head towards the Montana Gardens to visit the Al Haramlik Palace and view the Stanley Bridge in passing.

- Dine on some of the best seafood ever with stops at the famous White and Blue Restaurant and Fish Market. Another great option for some of the best cuisine is the Chicken Tikka.

Although Alexandria is no longer the setting for many historic events, dramatic stories and architectural feats, it is now the home of many high-rise buildings, landmarks, modern hotels and apartments, and traffic-filled streets.
