Facts

  1. Listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages from the 5th to 15th centuries.

  2. Located in the port city of Alexandria - the second largest city in Egypt.

  3. Often called a necropolis, which means the city of the dead, the Catacombs house 3 sarcophagi (coffins for mummies) inside.

  4. They were created in the 2nd century. Today, they still exist.

  5. Kom el Shoqafa mean "Mound of Shards" as the area was once full of broken bits of pottery.

  6. The Catacombs are found underground consisting of a banquet hall, a second level full of sculptures and three large coffins and a third level that is completely underwater.

  7. Discovered in 1900 by a donkey that accidentally fell into the shaft leading to the burial site.

  8. There is a hallway leading to the Hall of Caracalla. Believed to be the burial chamber for citizens of Alexandria that were killed by Roman Emperor Caracalla.

  9. This site is an example of the diverse cultures that occupied Alexandria at the time. Objects made in Greek, Roman and Egyptian style have been found.

  10. Today, the public can explore the catacombs and enter the tombs via a spiral staircase that were used to lower bodies inside the chambers.
